In 2022 Open Access Australasia investigated 187 research active institutions across four sectors in the ANZ region to see what OA initiatives were being practised at the institutional level. We looked at universities and compared them with research institutions in the health, government and non-profit sectors to see if approaches to OA differed. In 2024 Open Access Australasia undertook an update for the university sector looking to find any changes to policies, repositories or open publishing across the 56 universities included in the original study. These updates were presented nationally and internationally at conferences in 2024.
The main conclusions were:
- Although there has been considerable work across the sector reviewing and/or updating open access policies in 2023 and 2024, 22 universities remain without any formal OA policy. Of the existing policies only 12 include specific recognition of Indigenous Data Sovereignty & Governance (10 in the OA policy itself and 2 in related policies) showing an increase from 7 at the end of 2022.
- While open access rates have been increasing since 2022 full text availability in repositories has been in significant decline over the same period.
- No additional universities in the region have undertaken open publishing initiatives since 2022.
- 42 of 56 universities are actively publishing OERs, 39 of these via the CAUL OER Collective
