The vision of open science depends on a robust network of well-functioning repositories that collect, preserve, and provide access to millions of valuable research outputs. Over the last two decades, university libraries have diligently set up repositories to manage and share their institutional outputs and there are currently thousands of open access repositories around the world. But does every library really need to host its own repository? What is the right balance between offering localized services versus the potential benefits of cost sharing, especially during periods of economic strain. Many countries are adopting a more coordinated approach to managing open science infrastructure including repositories.
Join us for a day-long conversation about the opportunities and challenges of shared repository infrastructure in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. The event will feature local representatives as well as speakers from several other countries (e.g. Canada, France, Japan, Portugal) who will explain their approaches to shared repository infrastructure and provide any insights and lessons learned.
Specific Objectives
- Review several national approaches for repository infrastructure including shared infrastructure models.
- Explore major aspects that need to be addressed in these models.
- Discuss the current opportunities and level of readiness in Australia for moving towards a shared approach.
Target audiences
- Library directors, repository experts, research funders and infrastructure providers, international participants (e.g. COAR, Canada, Portugal, France, Japan.)
Costs
- There is no registration cost for attendees. All travel costs will be covered by individual participants.
Outline of programme
- Morning: Presentations about existing models from AONZ and international initiatives
- Afternoon: Discussing options for the future: preferred infrastructure and service models, governance structure, costs and funding

From the top of Musk Avenue / Victoria Park Road intersection: Follow the path to ‘Main Path’ and walk underneath A block (cream older style building). Continue straight ahead and Gather Café (T block) will be on the left and KG Library (R block) on the right. Enter the Library and turn left before the wooden staircase and follow this through to E Block. Take the lift to Level 5 E block.
From the QUT Kelvin Grove Bus Station: Exit the station by elevator and follow walkway to QUT. Once on campus, take the elevator to level 3 and exit. E block will be on the corner in front of you. Enter E block on Level 0 and take the elevator to level 5.
