Garth Smith, Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato – University of WaikatoI’ve been part of the committee for two years consecutively, and there are three (because it is a magic number) things that I think are important for everyone to know before they even consider making a move towards even thinking about the possibility of not signing up for it next time. Because the default position should absolutely be YES.
1. You do not have to be an Open Access expert. The committee is about helping to organise, sending emails (to potential panellists, presenters, or speakers), brainstorming topics, asking questions and building networks and contacts. It isn’t about knowing everything, and there will be other committee members there to help with tricky bits.
2. You build great networks. Open Access Australasia is connected to more than Aotearoa New Zealand or Australia. Working on a committee of international people who are willing to learn, share and collaborate is brilliant!
3. You learn more! I’ve learned more each time I’ve been part of the committee. And it really has helped me become more passionate about things I didn’t know much about before!
I’m very much aware that this looks like a sales pitch. Because it is. But not in the way you think. You already know you should sign up. It’s a great opportunity. Think of it more as a confirmation that you have made the right choice (which is to join the committee this year) and now you can relax and start thinking of all the great topics that this year’s Open Access Week Committee will set up. You’re amazing before the event even starts, how fantastic is that?!

It’s provided me with opportunities for professional growth. Yes, it’s hard work at times, but it’s also incredibly rewarding! I’ve learnt a lot, always received robust support, and experienced a genuine sense of achievement. I am immensely proud of the sessions we’ve created during my time involved.
There are templates for practically everything – you don’t need existing event planning experience or vast existing networks. All you need is a “can do” attitude and maybe some fresh ideas for a session.
