The Open Access Australasia Rights Retention Working Group brings you this OAA Member Forum workshop.
Most of us – researchers and those who support them – don’t fully understand the publishing contracts we encounter. These agreements are often long, complex, and filled with legal jargon, with each publisher using its own version. We sign them to share research widely and advance careers, but the implications can catch us off guard.
Typically, these agreements require ‘assigning’ copyright to the publisher. But what does that mean in practice? Can work be posted on ResearchGate or an institutional repository? What if it goes out of print? Are digital rights surrendered? Can it be translated? How does open access change things?
This workshop is for researchers and support staff alike. We’ll dissect real publishing agreements, unpack their language, and clarify what rights remain for using and sharing the material.
Bring along a publishing agreement of your own. These can be book or journal agreements. We will have exemplars if you don’t have one handy.
