In 2020, with the issues with cost, availability and licensing of e-books becoming highly apparent during the first pandemic wave, three academic librarians in the UK wrote an Open Letter seeking a governmental investigation into the academic publishing industry. This letter rapidly grew into the #ebooksos campaign, attracting attention and support from all over the globe, continuing to push for action and sparking wider discussions around copyright and alternative models of publishing. This webinar shares the history of the campaign and where it is at now, and asks the question of whether there is a place for #ebooksos in Australasia?

Rachel Bickley is a Liaison Librarian supporting the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology at the University of Adelaide, and one of the founders of the #ebooksos campaign. She emigrated to Australia in August 2022 from London, where she had been working at London Metropolitan University Library, supporting teaching and learning and research, for over three years, and prior to that she held academic librarian positions in various universities around the UK after attaining her MA Librarianship from the University of Sheffield in 2010. Her professional interests include Open Access publishing, research impact, critical/sustainable collection development and critical pedagogy.
