Diamond Open Access (OA) journals supported by universities across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand are now eligible for inclusion in the Diamond Discovery Hub (DDH), a service aimed at enhancing the visibility of no-fee scholarly publishing.
The DDH forms part of the European Diamond Capacity Hub (EDCH) and is designed to become a comprehensive index of institutionally published and scholar-led Diamond OA journals that do not charge any author and reader fees.
This new eligibility follows the recently announced association between Australia and Horizon Europe, the European Union’s flagship research and innovation program. Aotearoa New Zealand is also among the 22 non-EU countries associated with Horizon Europe, enabling broader collaboration and participation in European-led research infrastructure initiatives such as the DDH.
Inclusion in the DDH offers a significant opportunity for universities and publishers to improve the visibility, discoverability, and global reach of their Diamond OA journals.
A spokesperson for EDCH says, “We welcome the extension of Diamond Open Access indexing to Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand through the Diamond Discovery Hub. The association of both countries with Horizon Europe creates important new opportunities for collaboration, and we look forward to engaging with colleagues across the region in support of community-led, no-fee scholarly publishing.”
The Australian Diamond Journal Publishing Community of Practice adds, “We’re pleased to have an opportunity to make Diamond journals published in this region more visible and to increase the discoverability of these publications via the Diamond Discovery Hub. Diamond journals published in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand include research from a wide range of disciplines, communities, and perspectives, and make an important contribution to a more diverse and inclusive scholarly publishing landscape.”
How to participate
Participation in the DDH involves a straightforward two-step process:
- Become a trusted data source
To submit journals to the DDH, organisations must first register and join the EDCH Registry network. Eligible entities include:
- Institutional publishers
- Publishing service providers
- Service, tools and technology providers
- National Capacity Centres
- Meet the six Diamond OA criteria
- Journals must meet all following criteria to qualify:
- Possess a valid ISSN
- Be a scholarly journal
- Provide fully open access content under an open licence
- Charge no author fees (no APCs or membership fees)
- Allow authorship without restriction based on affiliation
- Be owned by a public or not-for-profit organisation that performs or promotes research and scholarship

Diamond Journal Publishing Community of Practice (CoP)
This community is a joint endeavour between Open Access Australasia, CAUL and Creative Commons Australia, and is a subgroup of the Australian Scholarly Communications Community of Practice.
The Diamond Journal Publishing CoP advocates for inclusive, equitable, sustainable, community-controlled OA publishing with no fees to either reader or author.
